VERSION 1.0a : 1996.09.29 by Glenn TariganAdditional comments by "Moby" Henry Kong Andrew Chang Feel free to distribute this document. Make sure the credits remain intact. I'd like to get some comments, especially from people who have been to any of the arcades mentioned here. What can I do to improve this guide? Do you have any details or opinions to add? Note: "Lower Mainland" refers to a southwest portion of British Columbia, Canada. The major arcades listed so far are in the cities of Burnaby, Coquitlam and Vancouver. I've listed the arcades here in sequence from best to worst (all IMHO). For now, only the near and accessible arcades are reviewed here-- the farthest arcade is 80minutes by bus from my house. The ASCII maps are roughly to scale as I fudged some of the details where convenient. The descriptions I've put into this guide will not remain true for long, as arcades (the good ones, anyway) change often. The data for my favorite arcades will be frequently updated-- about once a week, or two-- but other arcades will be ignored until it becomes painful. Each arcade's description follows this format: Name of arcade. Date: This shows when I last collected information for this arcade. Phone Number. Address: I also include a description of its surroundings. Summary Stats: The total number of games. Size of arcade in square meters. (All measurements are rough estimates, sometimes rounded off.) Hours: The opening hours. Restrictions: Whether smoking, food or drink are allowed. Do they require tokens? New games: How often do they get new games? This is just a guess. Seating: Are there stools or chairs available? How many? Lighting: Is it dark inside, or bright? Misc: Comments and notes. Map: Detailed pictorial, showing where the games are and how much it costs to play them. If you have information on other arcades in British Columbia (Richmond, for example), please let me know. Send comments, corrections & suggestions to . Can anyone put this document (and future versions) up on a web-page? I would also be interested in guides to arcades in other cities and countries, just out of curiosity (I might someday visit your city...). Anyone up to the task? Anyway, how do our arcades stack up against those in your city? I've heard of big arcades, but I want more details. - Glenn Tarigan ================ RECOMMENDATIONS & OVERVIEW: ================ If you're not sure which arcades are worth going to, then I suggest you visit Granville St, UBC and Lester's. Those are the hot spots. Lesters has the best SF competition BY FAR in Vancouver... UBC has the best competition for most other games during the daytime, and Wednesday/Friday nights as well... A brand-new super entertainment centre (VIRGIN RECORDS) is opening on Robson, called Robson Central. Expect it to be huge. :) [Moby] Summary: Restrictions -------- Personal #pooltables #Seats Ranking #pinballs m^2/vidgame Frequency_of_new_games Name | #vidgames Size_of_vidgame_area_in_m^2 ----------------------------------------------------------- UBC 1 62 5 8 275 4.4 40 S Fast Lester's 2 77 6 3 270 3.5 30 S Medium Lion's Lair 3 57 3 - 175 3.1 15 M Faster Ocean Star 4a 49 7 - 150 3.1 11 M Faster Movieland 4b 55 8 - 120 2.2 6 M Fast Johnny Zee 5a 31 4 - 140 4.5 0 SFT Medium Game Palace 5b 31 4 - 95 3.1 6 SF Medium Shooting Star 5c 25 3 - 85 3.4 0 SFT Medium SFU 6a 19 4 - 72 3.8 2 - Medium Midnight Star 6b 28 4 - 80 2.9 5 M Medium Command HQ 7 41 5 - 160 3.9 0 SFT Very Slow Jolly Genie's 8a 25 2 - 100 4.0 2 SFT Glacial Sidepocket 8b 9 2 13 30 3.3 0 SF Slow Westwood Mall 8c 10 - - 30 3.0 0 S Slow High-Run 8d 6 - 12 40 6.7 7 - Medium ------------------------- Totals: 525 57 36 1822 3.5 124 S = no smoking F = no food or drink allowed T = tokens must be used M = no minors allowed Here are some notes about specific games: (I don't play many games, so I need some comments from others.) Daytona USA: The largest group is at UBC: 8 linked seats. Die Hard: The cheapest game of Die Hard is at Lester's Arcade: it costs 75 cents for 3 lives. Other places cost a dollar for 3 lives, or sometimes only 1 life! Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara If you want to find enough people to join you for a 3 or 4 player game then UBC (they have two units) and Lester's Arcade are the best places. SFU is actually not too bad during the autumn semester from noon to around 1500 on weekdays. The new version (in which cheaters can't use the glitch) can be found at these places: UBC, SFU and Midnight Star. Game Palace has a Japanese version which has katakana for the names, so people haven't bothered trying to find the invincibility code. If you go to Lester's, you'll constantly have to deal with people who use the glitch. Lion's Lair's machine has the buttons for Magic and Select switched around, so it takes a bit of time to adjust to it. However, I wouldn't play there in the first place because the buttons are damaged. Magical Drop II: Lester's is the only place that has this game on a megalo unit. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo: The best place to play this is at UBC: it's on a megalo screen and it's best two out of three rounds-- when it's crowded, you can often have seven or more spectators. In contrast, Lion's Lair and Game Palace have it set to best of one round and it's in a regular-size cabinet. Virtua Fighter 2: Lester's is the only place that has this game on a megalo unit, but it's set to high damage settings... Lion's Lair is a good place to play: 50cents for 3 of 5 rounds. They have the short black joysticks which I prefer. They also have comfortable stools. Most of Vancouver's best VF2ers used to go to UBC, but I think they go to Lion's Lair now. [Moby] ======================== ABBREVIATIONS & SYMBOLS: ======================== Note: All these games exist in at least one arcade. If the game is no longer available, then I will remove its abbreviation from this list. All abbreviations listed here have at least one capital letter. If an abbreviation used in a map is all lower-case, that means that I've created it for just that one map and you should look below the map for its own list of abbreviations. This usually applies to racing games, and only if there are more than the minimum number of seats. Most maps have north as facing up. W+E North would be in a different direction if I otherwise S couldn't fit all the details within 80-columns width (usually). The following symbols are placed next to the game abbreviations to indicate the cost for one play: - = 25 cents ~ = 50 cents to start, 25 cents to continue = = 50 cents : = 75 cents to start, 50 cents to continue ^ = 75 cents * = 1 dollar (All amounts are in Canadian dollars. $1CAN =~ $0.72US) Notes: For certain games, when counting the number of game consoles: 1 unit = 2 seats. Examples include Daytona USA, Manx TT Superbike, and Virtual On. Neo Geo consoles count as 1 unit, even if they have 2 or more games. "Loon" and "loonie" refer to the 1-dollar coin. "Twoonie" refers to the 2-dollar coin. ========================================== University of British Columbia Sub-Arcade: As of 1996.09.26 ========================================== Phone: 604-822-3692 Address: Located in the lower floor of the Student Union Building, which is just north of the main bus-depot. There is a snackbar, pub, deli, cafeteria and more in the vicinity. New games: 1 to 3 weeks. One of the best. Seating: ~40 padded stools. ~17 padded stools for pooltable area. Lighting: Dimly lit by track-lights. The pool-table area is brighter. Misc: They have several change-machines, one of which accepts twoonies. All accept loonies, $2, $5 and $10 dollar bills. There are from 2 to 4 staff present at any time. It's quite empty during the summer afternoons, though fairly good crowds appear during the evenings on weekends. This is my favorite arcade because they have the games I like and you can't beat a big university for the huge daytime crowds during the semester. There's a lot of room for spectators. The games are usually turned on all the time. Some machines are reset when they do their (frequent) rearranging. This arcade changes more often than any other major arcade here. That is, they are often renovating the place and moving games around, shifting their arrangement (not necessarily getting new games). They are also quite responsive to complaints and will repair or upgrade games in a reasonable time. East of the intersection of Gilley St and Kingsway. It isn't next to any center of major activity (i.e., a shopping mall). Summary Stats: 77 videogame units: 70 games + 7 duplicates + 2 more on Neo Geo 6 pinballs (2 DUSA, 2 SFA2, 2 SFA, 4 Solitaire, 2 Mahjong) 3 pool tables 15 miscellaneous: 3 hockey + 1 basketball + 1 football + 2 crane-games + 8 others Area: 270m^2 70m^2 for pooltables and non-videogames Hours: Open 24hrs a day every day of the year. Restrictions: No smoking. Eating/drinking is allowed: they sell food in the adjoining snackbar. There's also an internet cafe upstairs. They're the only arcade I know of in which you have to leave your bags at the counter. "DRESS CODE AFTER 8PM-- NO DIRTY OR TORN CLOTHING, NO MACK JACKETS." New games: 3 to 6 weeks. They do a fairly good job of getting the current games, but lag behind Lion's Lair by a few weeks or worse. Seating: ~30 wooden stools. Lighting: Dim. Strips of red and blue neon lights line the edges where the ceiling meets the walls. In the middle part of the arcade is a long strip of dim yellow light bulbs. The ceiling is tiled with mirrors, which helps to stretch what little light there is. The sections on both sides of the pooltable area have no lights at all and no mirrors on the ceiling. Misc: There are two change-machines which accept loons, twoonies and 2 & 5 dollar bills. Lately they've adopted a policy of rejecting ten-dollar bills because of a counterfeit scare. You can get help at the attendant's desk in the middle of the arcade. They have a staff of one to three people in the arcade at any one time. At the service desk is a black&white TV displaying the security camera sweep of the parking-lot and entrances. The noise level of the games is probably the loudest anywhere. For the kids, they have ticket dispensing games, for which you can collect prizes. The men's washroom really reeks of urinal cakes. You can smell it all the way from the Virtual-On machine. It's very busy on Friday and weekend evenings through to the wee hours of the night (e.g., 0300hrs). Not very busy during the daytime. Gets more crowded towards 1700hrs. Their game prices (for the games I like, anyway) are often better than at other arcades. Located in the downtown core, on the east side of Granville St, by the intersection of Nelson St. This is one of the more seamy parts of the city: lots of the homeless, beggars, and a number of porn shops too (7 of them within two city blocks, if you're interested). Summary Stats: 57 videogame units: 51 games + 6 duplicates 3 pinballs (2 GBNY + 2 SC + 2 KoF96 + 2 DUSA + 2 mrun + 2 XvSF) Area: 175m^2 Hours: Open from 0900 to 0100 everyday. Restrictions: 18 years minimum-- there are a few games depicting nudity. Above the service desk is a calendar with a nude-of-the-month, too. Smoking and eating/drinking are allowed. There are many smokers around, and most games have cigarette burns on their consoles. They put signs on the games asking that you not put cigarettes on the games, but they forget to provide ashtrays, and most people ignore the request. During the summer there is a strong wind from the air-con at one corner, where you can get away from the smoke. New games: 1 to 3 weeks. This arcade is almost always the first one to get the latest games. Seating: ~15 padded stools Lighting: Bright. The central section of the room has tiled-mirrors on the ceiling. Misc: They have more of the latest games than UBC and Lester's *combined*, which is funny, considering how much bigger those other two arcades are. On the other hand, the games often cost more to play, and it's more comfortable to play at the other places. Ocean Star is the only arcade that has new games that Lion's Lair doesn't have. Misc: SFU's arcade used to be much more pathetic, but they've moved it to a larger room and they've finally gotten some decent new games. Still, it's not big enough to deserve any staff of its own, so if you have a problem with a machine, you'll have to look hard to find someone in charge. They didn't have a change machine up until 1996.09.19. Now you can exchange loons, twoonies, 2-, 5- and 10-dollar bills. The volume on most of the games is rather quiet. Sometimes you have to strain to hear them. They keep the machines on most of the time. Some of the games get reset maybe once a week.
